Goodbye Sofa Set

Today, we finally say goodbye to our Sofa Set. It was given to us by my MIL, when she had to move from her house to the old folks home. She had to leave when she had a brain hemorrhage.

It has been with us since we moved here in 2001 and it has served us well for the last 7 yrs. I think it may well be about 20 yrs old. We decided at first to give up the 2 single seaters because we simply didn't have the place anymore. I found it extremely hard to do my chores. Secondly, when visitors come for dinner, the dining area is so cramped and difficult for anyone to sit comfortably.

So, at first we decided that we will give away the 2 single seaters, scheduled to be picked up today by the second hand shop. Then yesterday, after a feast at DH's company, a retirement feast, while walking to the car we spotted this furniture shop. We walked in with no intention to buy anything of course, and there it was, just what we were looking for.

We had about 2 weeks ago gone shopping for a sofa set, we did see something that we may have bought, however, we needed to place an order and it would have taken us about 8 weeks for delivery. Furthermore, it wasn't available in the colour we wanted. Went to about 3 shops that day.

We came back home then and decided that we will just give up the 2 single seaters and I would do an upholstery on the 3 seater.

However, yesterday, we found the 3 seater that we wanted and so the whole sofa set goes today.

It was a difficult decision to let the 3 seater go because firstly, it was an english style furniture and with walnut wood trimmings. It matched our home perfectly. However, the seats are sinking in, and the wool cloth is not so comfortable on the skin, especially in the summer when one is wearing sleeveless or shorts. It really itches the skin. It's not easy to clean them up too. I could wash the cushion covers but not any other part.

Besides, the cigarette stains have discoloured the pink wool cloth to a brownish coloured sofa.

We first made an appt with a upholstery company and the guy offered us 1800 euro just to upholster the 3 seater alone. We thought hard about it and decided that we could buy a 3 seater sofa set for much lesser.

We had placed it on sales on internet sites for the last whole year and no one seems interested to buy it.

Well, goodbye our sofa set, it had been a pleasure to have had you with us all these years. I do feel sad to let you go because I did love your model and it was a pleasure polishing your wood, however, it's now time that we parted ways. I do hope that some other family would enjoy sitting on you as much as we did.
